More about the day
Scitech Challenge Days provide students with a fantastic opportunity to represent their school in a friendly competition where they develop and apply their 21st Century Skills to solve a real-world problem.
Thoughtfully designed by Scitech’s very own team of STEM educators, each Challenge Day will expand on the students’ existing knowledge of the world around them. Throughout each session, students will work in teams of four and use design thinking principles to explore and address a real-world problem.
At the end of the day each team will present their designs to fellow participants and judges. Outstanding teams will then be presented with an award from a WA STEM professional. Afterwards, students will get a quick insight into a specific STEM field via a short presentation from the guest STEM professional.
The event will draw on a variety of skills and interdisciplinary knowledge and understandings and as a result, students who have a particular interest in the STEM subjects and students who have demonstrated a keenness in learning through exploration, in collaborative groups and/or hands-on experience would be well suited to the event.
Students, in teams of 4, will work towards understanding and innovating to solve the problem. Engagement with the problem will foster the development of students’ creativity, communication, critical thinking and collaboration skills as well as developing students’ sense of character and communication. At the conclusion of the day, teams will be encouraged to communicate their process towards their solution with their peers.
